How to change your NetID password on Extension Network

The NetID password (master password for all Illinois services and logins, changed annually) is ordinarily and most easily changed when in an Extension office on the Extension network. This article instructs how to change the password while on the Extension network to avoid direct consequences such as computer lockout.

Confirm your Network Connection

  1. Please confirm your computer is connected to the Extension network using a network ethernet cable or a Wifi connection. A network ethernet connection is preferred and recommended for this procedure.  You can either be connected to a docking station with an ethernet cable connected or have an ethernet cable directly connected to your computer's network port.
  2. If your office only supports Wifi connections, please be connected to the uie-uofi network. (Note: The uie-guest network or uie-staff networks will not allow you to authenticate.)

Changing your password (If you know your current password)

  1. Visit the netID Center (https://identity.uillinois.edu/)
  2. Select Log in
  3. Log in with your NetID and current password
  4. Select Change password
    • You may be asked to review your recovery options. If you do not have at least one form of recovery option, you will be required to set one up.
  5. Change your password according to the rules listed.  Please note that the final two rules are checked on submission.
  6. Select Set password

Changing your password (If you do not remember your current password)

  1. Visit the netID Center (https://identity.uillinois.edu/)
  2. Select Forgotten or expired password? link below the Log in button.
  3. Enter your Netid
  4. Follow the onscreen prompts to use one of the three recovery options you have set up: Non-University email address, text, or phone callback.

You will be sent a code to the method chosen in step 4. This code will be valid for 10 minutes and will be used to verify your identity and allow you to reset your password.

  5. Change your password according to the rules listed.  Please note that the final two rules are checked on submission.
  6. Select Set password

Lock your computer and Log in with New Password

After changing your password, please "Lock" your computer. (This will allow you to maintain your network connection if using Wifi and is much quicker than restarting your computer. )

  1. Lock your computer by doing one of the following:
    • Select the Windows Start menu, hover the mouse over your User profile, and select Lock
    • Use the two keys together, Windows + L
    • Press CTRL + ALT + DEL and click Lock on the list of commands to lock your pc.
  2. Log in to your computer using the new password

From this point on, the computer will recognize only your new password.  Following the password change per usual, programs like Skype will prompt for the new password while other programs like Box and Zoom may not. Please apply your netID (or full email address when required) and password to each prompt.
