Canvas@Illinois , Assignment - Student Annotation

The page covers the Student Annotation tool in Canvas which enables students to annotate a provided document and submit the annotation for review, feedback, and grading.

Enable Student to Use Annotation Tools

When enabled, students can use the same annotation tools available to instructors in the Speed Grader to annotate a file provided by the instructor. Please note that this activity presents an accessibility challenge for some students and you should have an accommodation plan in place before adding this to your course.

To enable this feature create a new assignment and scroll down to Submission Type. Select Online.

Once Online has been selected, more options will appear. Select Student Annotation and choose the file you want the students to annotate. You may choose from course or personal files hosted on Canvas or a file from your computer. Scroll down and save.

When the student clicks on the assignment link, they will be brought to a page that displays the file provided by their instructor and will have a variety of annotation tools available to them. Note: When Enhanced Assignment is enabled, the student can easily preview this file. However, when it is not enabled, the student cannot see the file prior to clicking "Start Assignment".
