iSchool Classroom, LIS 53
Room Layout
The layout of Room 53 is shown below. As you can see, Room 53 is unique, in that it comes equipped with large televisions for a main display and for smaller, group displays for students to use.

Below are the inputs for the Room 53 displays are shown. This input device is located in the black cage (unlocked) at the front of the room.
- The built-in system for the room is controlled by a Mac Mini, located on the table to the right of the black cage. It is dual boot and both Mac and Windows can be loaded. This is the only option available in this room when utilizing a hybrid setup (online and in-person).
- There is an HDMI cable running across the front desk labeled 'For Laptops'. This will allow you to connect your laptop to the room displays and speakers - but NOT to the room mic or camera, which is why it will not work for an online / hybrid setup.
- The third input will allow you to connect your laptop wirelessly to the room displays - either by Solstice (Windows) or AirPlay (Mac). This will display your laptop screen but NOT the built-in speakers, camera, or mic.
The main display of Room 53 is the TV at the front of the room, with the TVs on the other walls acting as secondary displays. The power button for all is on the bottom edge of the device, in the center. There is also a remote that will control the main display and the secondary display that is the same size on the opposite wall. The secondary displays will default to displaying that which is on the main display. To override the main display, connect a personal device to the secondary display via HDMI cable. The built-in computer is connected to monitor at the front desk, which can be used to extend or mirror the main display.
Using the Built-in Computer
Using the built-in computer in room 53 is the only way to use the room for a hybrid set-up, since only the built-in computer connects to the built-in microphone and cameras.
- Check that the Built-in input (1) is selected in the equipment cage.
- Ensure the built-in computer and monitor are both turned on.
- Use the wired keyboard and mouse located on top of the desk by the monitor or the side table next to the built-in computer.
- Select Windows or Mac and then log in using your NetID and password.
Using the HDMI for Laptops
Your own laptop can be connected to and used in this room, but it only makes sense to use for in-person events, since you will not have access to the built-in camera or microphone using this method.
- Check that the HDMI input (2) is selected in the equipment cage.
- Plug the HDMI cable labeled 'For Laptops' into your device. If you do not have an HDMI port available, there is a white Tripp-Lite USB-C adapter on the side table you can use.
Using Wireless Content Sharing
Connecting using Solstice (Windows)
If you want to connect wirelessly to a Windows laptop, you will need to download and install the Solstice application on your device. If you are borrowing a laptop from the Help Desk, this should already be installed. Mac users have the option to use AirPlay, which does not require a separate download and installation. Either option is display-only and does not connect you to the built-in speakers, camera, or mic.
- Check that the Solstice input (3) is selected in the equipment cage.
- Ensure that you are connected to the IllinoisNet wireless network.*
- Follow the instructions on the main display by opening your web browser and navigating to the URL displayed. If you need to download the Solstice application, there will be a link to do so. If you already have it installed, click the 'Already have the app?'
- You will be given a 4-digit code on the main display to input into the Solstice application on your laptop. Afterwards, click Connect.
- From there, you will be connected to the room and can choose to share your desktop, an application window, or a media file.
*After going through these steps once, you can just open the Solstice application after Step 2 and select the room from the recent list.
Connecting using AirPlay (Mac)
- Check that the Solstice input (3) is selected in the equipment cage.
- Ensure that you are connected to the IllinoisNet wireless network.
- Go to System Settings > Displays and select the proper room from the available displays in the Add Display drop-down.
- You will be prompted to enter the AirPlay password.
- There should be a 4-digit code displayed on the main display.
- Enter this as the password. This password changes regularly so you do not need to save or remember it.
- From there, you will be connected to the room and can choose to share your desktop, an application window, or a media file.
Misc.
Note: Our laser pointers can also be used as clickers to navigate slideshow presentations.
Clicker Instructions
- Remove the USB device from the clicker–it should be located on the back of the clicker near the top.
- Insert the USB device into the computer you would like to present from.
- Navigate to the slideshow you would like to present and open it (you can also press the yellow F5/Esc button on the clicker to start the presentation).
- Use the arrow keys on the clicker to navigate the slideshow.
Troubleshooting
If a clicker is not working, check that:
- The USB connector is plugged into the computer using the clicker.
- The clicker is turned on.
- The batteries are not dead. (Try out the laser pointer function on the clicker to confirm.)
- The slideshow is active window on the computer using the clicker. If a person is presenting in PowerPoint, then switches to another window, the clicker will not advance the slides until they make the slideshow the active window by clicking inside PowerPoint. This is a particularly common issue for hybrid presentations, when a presenter may be switching between PowerPoint and Zoom.
The mounted, remote-controlled camera for recording and hybrid teleconference purposes. Note: Do NOT manipulate this camera by hand. Instead, use the remote control at the front of the room.
