HR-51: ORAL PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH AND THE EMPLOYMENT OF NON-NATIVE SPEAKING FACULTY AND TEACHING ASSISTANTS
All faculty and teaching assistants must be orally proficient in English.
The attached policies provide guidelines for employment of non-native English speaking faculty and graduate students who wish to obtain teaching appointments at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). The policies refer to those individuals for whom English is not the native language, regardless of whether or not they are United States citizens. This policy was originally established in 1988 to bring UIUC into compliance with the Illinois Senate Bill 1516. The intent of these policies is to ensure that all instructors are adequately proficient in oral English before they are given instructional responsibilities.
Further questions concerning these guidelines should be directed to the Division of Instructional Development, Office of Instructional Resources, (217) 333-3370. (Policy issues should be directed to the Office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.)
