Multifactor Authentication (MFA): Using Microsoft Authenticator or Duo

Our environment supports multiple Single Sign-On (SSO) systems. The authentication method you use depends on the type of application:
  • Urbana Campus-based applications (such as MyIllini, Outlook, Teams, Zoom, etc.):
You may choose to use either Microsoft Authenticator or Duo for MFA.
  • Illinois Administrative System-based applications (such as NetID Center, My UI Info, iBuy, etc.):
Duo is required; Microsoft Authenticator is not supported for these logins.

Using Microsoft Authenticator for Campus Applications

If you do not have Microsoft Authenticator set up:

  1. Download the Microsoft Authenticator app:
    • iOS and iPadOS (15.0 or later)
    • Android (8.0 or later)
  2. Add Microsoft Authenticator as a sign-in method:
Go to https://aka.ms/mfasetup and follow the prompts.
Note: You will need to perform MFA (using Duo) to add a new method.

If you already have Microsoft Authenticator set up:

  1. When signing in to a campus-based application, you will see a screen like this:
Screen shows the "Other ways to sign in" Option.
  2. Click on Other ways to sign in.
  3. Select Approve a request on my Microsoft Authenticator app.

This is a screen shot of the options when you click on Other Ways to Sign In.

Important Note:

  • Microsoft Authenticator does not work for any login that is behind the Illinois Administrative System-based SSO.
For this, you must continue to use Duo.
