Teams and Zoom, Webcam not detected

When using video conferencing software such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom, you may occasionally get an error message or image showing that your webcam is not detected. One of the most common reasons this occurs is due to the webcam shutter that comes installed on Lenovo laptops. This article will show you how to identify, toggle, and move the webcam shutter that comes with these laptops. If you are still experiencing an issue with your laptop's webcam, please email helpdesk@business.illinois.edu, call 217-244-0812, or visit 3044 BIF during normal business hours.

After joining Teams or Zoom meetings, the following images or messages may be familiar sights:

Teams, No camera detected

Zoom, unable to detect camera

If your webcam is not detected in either Teams and Zoom, such as in the above images, one of the most common reasons for this is the built-in webcam shutter in Lenovo laptops.  When this shutter covers the webcam, the camera is disabled and turned off.

The following steps will enable the webcam on your Lenovo laptop and allow it to be detected by Teams and Zoom.

First, if you can see an orange, gray, or white dot then your laptop's webcam is currently covered by its shutter.

Next, identify the notch in the shutter's physical switch.

With a fingernail, or similar object, gently pull the switch to the right.

Once the switch is pulled back, the camera will be visible.

Note: when you are in a meeting the camera will be visibly lit.
