COM Windows 11 Upgrade
COMIR will upgrade the operating system of our supported PC systems to the latest, newest supported version, Windows 11.
Windows 10 will no longer be supported by Microsoft and therefore will not receive updates after October 14th, 2025.
There are supported PC systems that will not be eligible for the Windows 11 upgrade due to not meeting the minimum operating system requirements. These systems will need to be replaced with new computers.
Note, many of these Windows 11 ineligible systems are also out of warranty.
Microsoft has decided to offer an Extended Security Updates (ESU) service for systems that are on Windows 10 after October 14th, 2025.
The ESU is a yearly service that is being made available through UIC Webstore in July and we are currently looking into how to implement the ESU.
There will be a cost, and at the moment, the cost to the department is $1 per Windows 10 computer for one year.
The ESU is basically a grace period for Windows 10 computers, which will allow Windows 10 computers to receive support from Microsoft and therefore be supported by COMIR.
Please identify systems that require the older operating system so we can exclude them from Windows 11. These systems would be using particular hardware (ie, microscope) or software that is tied to the computer/operating system requirements and cannot be made functional or compatible with an operating system upgrade or computer replacement.
The COMIR Windows 11 upgrade will start next week (June 23rd week) in a staggered approach with smaller units/depts first.
The Windows 11 upgrade notification will populate through the normal Windows Update process with a notification and may take up to an hour onsite and up to 2 hours offsite when initiated.
Please reach out to COMIR if you encounter an issue:
