General Information

Device geolocation data can be used to determine a lost or stolen device's location and aid in recovery. Device location data is disclosed only to campus IT professionals who submit a request to the Endpoint Services team and meet all of the following criteria. Requests that do not satisfy these conditions will be denied:

  • The requester is an IT professional.
  • The device belongs to that IT professional’s department/unit.
  • The request is only to locate a lost or stolen device.
    • The request should never be for HR/disciplinary purposes.

If you suspect that a device has been stolen, please report it to the University of Illinois Police Department.

Additional information can be found here: Reporting Lost or Stolen Electronic Devices.

Requesting Location Data

If your request satisfies all of the above criteria, you may submit a location data request to the Endpoint Services team

Lost Mode

For iOS/iPadOS devices, as an alternative to a location data request, if a device is only suspected to be misplaced and not stolen, Lost Mode can be used to lock the screen and present a message and phone number to the person currently in possession of the device, requesting that they report the device location to you.
