Biorender

The campus negotiated a licensing agreement with BioRender in 2025 and it can now be purchased through the Webstore. The College of Vet Med also has a group license through the Webstore, details below.

General Purchasing Instructions (through Webstore)

Biorender is now available through "unit purchases" in Webstore with a FOP.  Login into Webstore and select "Unit Purchases".  Then click the Biorender link below or simply search Biorender.  Note, if you click the Biorender link directly, it may take you to Personal Purchases, which required a credit card.  Once you purchase, Webstore will send you instructions on how to install/activate.  If you are not an admin on the computer you need it installed on, reach back out to IT@vetmed.illinois.edu and we can schedule a time to help you with the install.

Vet Med Group License (through Webstore)

The University of Illinois does have a negotiated individual license subscription with BioRender through the Webstore. However, the College of Veterinary Medicine happens to have a group license subscription with BioRender, also through the Webstore. Note that you'll use your NetID and password to log in to BioRender; therefore, individuals cannot share a single BioRender account.

Here's a breakdown:

  • Individual License: You are responsible for the full costs by providing a FOP. The license is tied to you and cannot be transferred to anyone else.
  • Group License (Vet Med): The College of Veterinary Medicine Shared Equipment Program covers 50% of the costs, with the remaining 50% filled by your department (how that is divided depends on the department). A key benefit is that if someone leaves the college (e.g., a graduating student), their license can be reassigned to another user.

A great feature of the group license is that no author listing is required for publishing figures. Everyone can contribute freely, regardless of their authorship position. However, it's always a good idea to double-check the specific author requirements for publication.

For any additional questions, I recommend reaching out to Julie Nguyen-Edquilang (jknguyn2@illinois.edu) in the Research Office or your department.
