Canvas@Illinois, View a student's quiz log for a Classic Quiz
After a student completes a quiz, instructors can access a quiz log to view data about when and how a student completed their quiz within Canvas.
As an instructor, you have access to quiz logs when your students complete a quiz. This feature can provide some insight into how a student completed their quiz. However, these quiz logs are not intended to validate academic integrity or identify cheating for a quiz.
Access the quiz log
- Select Quizzes in your course navigation menu.
- Select the name of the quiz.
- Select the 3-dot/Options button and then select Show Student Quiz Results from the drop down menu.
- Select the name of a student.
- Review the Session Information and Action Log for the selected student.
Important information about quiz logs
- You'll be able to view time stamps and associated quiz actions within the log.
- Each action will include status information such as:
- Viewed (and possibly read) a question: Indicates the student was active on the quiz page but may not have answered a question.
- Answered a question: Indicates the student started or has answered a question; if the question is shown to be answered multiple times, it indicates the student changed the answer or the answer was autosaved by the system.
- Stopped viewing the Canvas quiz-taking page: Indicates the student navigated away from the quiz (for example, closing the browser tab, opening a new browser tap, or navigates somewhere else in Canvas).
- Resumed: Indicates the student returned to the quiz.
- A quiz log will begin when a student begins to take a quiz, so some logs may show a quiz that is still in progress.
- If students have multiple attempts to complete a quiz, you'll be able to view the log for all attempts. However, it will default to the most recent attempt.
- Quiz logs are only retained for 6 months.
- Because of the autosave component within Canvas quizzes and the way certain question types are saved, log data may be inaccurate for the following question types: Fill-In-Multiple-Blank, Matching, Multiple Answer, and Multiple Dropdown.
