Universal Charge (UC) Codes vs. Legacy Charge Codes: How they work and how Service Revenue is Allocated
ANY service can use these codes in Charge Entry. When used, the universal charge applies revenue to the service based upon the Visit Type chosen for that charge item. This means that revenue will default to the current Visit, but can be overridden/changed during charge entry. (See the screenshot below.)

Note: This does NOT apply to legacy charges; their revenue is still realized by the code itself, not the Visit Type.
Services that do not typically have open Visits (E.g., Imaging, Pharmacy, Anesthesia) can select their Service under the Visit Type drop-down at charge entry. That Visit type will remain chosen when using Add Another Charge until the Submit Charge button is selected. • The same applies when a patient sees multiple services; you only need to ensure the actual UC codes are assigned to the proper Visit Type at the charge item level. o Example: A patient presents via the ER, and an ER Visit is opened; any other service providing care may put in their charges, leaving the overarching visit type as ER, by changing the Visit Type to their own as charges are entered.
Note: SANDI requires a visit type. If there is no open visit, you must choose one at the time of charge item entry.
