Guests, Creation, Short-Term Network Guest Accounts: Common Support Questions
For IT Pros This page contains information for campus IT pros and other campus hosts about how to sponsor short-term network guest accounts.
Responsibility for guests' behavior
The person or department who sponsors a guest is responsible for the guest's behavior. When each guest account is created, the NetID of the person who created it will also be recorded, in case there is a problem with the guest's actions on the campus network.
Host departments are responsible for the primary support of their guests. Departmental administrators should be prepared to perform troubleshooting to ensure that wireless cards are working properly and that they are correctly associating with IllinoisNet Wireless. If their guests require VPN access in addition to IllinoisNet wireless, they should assist their guests with installing and configuring the VPN client.
If there are problems with IllinoisNet WiFi or VPN access, the trouble should be reported by a person in the host department to the Help Desk.
Lost or disabled account information
If a guest user loses his or her connection information, return to the Short-Term Network Guest Accounts web site at:
From here, you can view and print the information for any guest user account that you have created.
If a password has been lost, you can create and assign a new password for that user.
If an account isn't working and you're not sure why, you can use the "Manage Accounts" option to search through all accounts regardless of their status. In the table of search results, you can click on the account name (for example, "guest02332") to see a history of events including the account's creation and whether or not the account was disabled.
Unless a different length of time was specified when the account was created, most guest accounts are automatically deleted after 1 day (roughly 24 hours from the time created). By default accounts become active as soon as they are created.
Departmentally sponsored guest accounts only: Departmentally sponsored accounts can be set to last for up to 31 days.
(Users creating personally sponsored guest accounts should simply create new accounts for their guests, and personal accounts cannot be extended past the 3-day limit.)
If an account has expired, you can create a new account and give that account information to your guest, who will need to use the new account name and password.
If a guest needs an account that will last for a long period of time,
consider requesting a guest
NetID for this individual instead.
