Add a Network Printer
Please use the following instructions to install a network printer.
Windows
- Go to the printer you want to add and record the printer name. In our example it is \\vetprint\Lac222
- Go back to your computer and Select Start
- Type the name of the printer (i.e. \\vetprint\Lac222) and press Enter
Macintosh
- Select System Preferences from the Apple menu
- Select Printers & Scanners
- Select the + button to add a printer
- Press the Control key while clicking the Default icon in the toolbar (or use a Two Finger click), then choose Customize Toolbar from the menu that appears (see also Additional Help below)
- Drag the Advanced (gear) to the toolbar
- Select Done
- Select the Advanced icon that was added to the toolbar
- In the Type section choose LPD/LPR Host or Printer
- Leave the Device section as Another Device
- Set the URL as lpd://vetprint.vetmed.illinois.edu/PrinterName (the name should be on a tag on the printer)
- You may rename the printer something memorable in the Name section
- You may add a location
- Select Generic PCL Printer (If this gives you issues printing color, you can always attempt to use Generic PostScript Printer to see if that helps print color.)
- Select Add
Additional Help - Mac Advanced Toolbar
On the add printer screen click in the top section (Figure 1) to get the additional Icon and Tool bar options. Then click on Advanced (Figure 2) and drag onto your toolbar. Skip to step 7 above once completed.
