EWS, Remote Access

This article describes the remote access resources available to Engineering Workstation (EWS) users.

Please note that all EWS resources are for instructional use only. Academic research on EWS resources is prohibited. More on our research policies can be found here: https://go.illinois.edu/ews-research-policy.

Remote Access Policies

All EWS policies apply to remote users, please see EWS Labs, EWS Policies for details. Additionally:

  • Idle sessions will be automatically disconnected
  • Users may be logged off automatically at 4:00am for maintenance.
  • Connecting to multiple Windows sessions and multiple Linux graphical sessions is not recommended.

Accessing Windows Applications with Citrix

Citrix streams Windows applications to a variety of platforms without needing to install the application locally. The application's computing needs are handled by EWS-hosted servers.  Citrix can open files from your EWS home directory, as well as files on the computer you are connecting from.

For instructions on connecting to Citrix, please see EWS, Remote Access, Connecting to Citrix.

Accessing the Graphical Linux Desktop with FastX

FastX allows you to connect via SSH to a graphical EWS Linux desktop. For instructions on connecting to FastX, please see EWS Labs, Remote Access, Connecting to EWS Linux with FastX.

Accessing the Linux Terminals Remotely with SSH

EWS users should use SSH and/or SFTP clients to connect to linux.ews.illinois.edu.

Accessing Your Files on EWS Instructional Storage

Instructions for copying your files from your instructional storage to your personal computer can be found here:

EWS Labs, Remote access to your EWS Linux home directory
EWS Labs, Remote access to your EWS Windows home directory
EWS Labs, Transferring files between Linux and Windows home directories
