What is HPRNet, formerly known as Research Network? 

The NSF-funded UIC High Performance Research Network (HPRNet), formerly known as the Research Network, is a high-speed network infrastructure with Internet 2 connectivity to external academic and research institutions. Bandwidth of up to 100 Gb/s is available both for on-campus connections and through the uplink to Internet 2. 


What are the applications of HPRNet? 

HPRNet is intended for applications requiring high network bandwidth. Generally, these applications encompass (a) system-to-system transfers of large datasets, (b) instrumentation requiring recording and storage of its raw data, and (c) live, high-volume streaming.  


Who can get access to HPRNet? 

HPRNet connectivity is provisioned by ACER and ACCC Networks to research groups based on their needs in the scope of the applications listed above. Requests must be made by eligible research faculty (either department heads or principal investigators). 


How do I get access to HPRNet? 

Research faculty should contact ACER to request access. Depending on the needs of a research group, access is either provided through ACER resources (e.g., centralized network-connected storage) or through direct connectivity within an office or lab. Direct connectivity for individual departments will usually require additional wiring and/or network hardware to be installed by ACCC Networks and Telecom. 


Is HPRNet available for general purpose use? 

No. Network connectivity that is not intended for data-intensive research cannot make use of HPRNet. For standard wired or wireless connectivity, please have your departmental administrator submit a standard campus network request to ACCC.
