Microsoft Windows 10 End-of-Life
After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates for Windows 10, which could expose computers on the university's network to security risks. For more information, please visit Microsoft's page at End of support for Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7.
We recommend purchasing a new machine based on your needs. Please review supported hardware at ACES Information Technology Support website. Contact aces-it-help@illinois.edu to coordinate with your local IT support team on recommendations or to place an order.

Can I keep Windows 10 computer on the network?
No, this presents a security risk to itself and any other devices that are on the university’s network.
What if I have software that requires Windows 10?
You can continue to use a Windows 10 computer as long as it is kept off the university's network (so network cable is unplugged and/or any wireless option is disconnected from IllinoisNet and IllinoisNet Guest). Alternatively, a virtual machine can be set up with Windows 10, which can be used on a Windows 11 device.
How do I know if my computer can be upgraded to Windows 11?
In the following link, scroll down to “How to Determine Your Computer Model”. You can find a list of Dell devices supported for upgrade to Window 11 under “Option 2: Check the System BIOS”: please select "Show All”, select your model and check for your device in the list:

Do I have any alternatives?

ACES Linux Research Workstations
Please keep in mind that Windows and Linux are quite different, and compatibility for desktop applications will vary. For example, some applications are Windows only and do not have a Linux version.
Linux is free, open source, and has no costs or licensing fees associated with it.
In ACES, Linux is primarily used for Research purposes, but please send us an email and ask about it if you are interested: aces-it-help@illinois.edu
