How to Upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11

This article provides step-by-step instructions for upgrading your Windows 10 device to Windows 11. It covers how to check your current Windows version, how to upgrade using Software Center, and troubleshooting steps if you encounter issues.

 

Step 1: Determine Your Current Windows Version 

To check your current Windows version:

  1. Click the Search Icon searchin your taskbar.

  2. Type winver and press Enter.

  3. A window will appear displaying your Windows version.

  4. Ensure your version is Windows 10. If your version is Windows 11, you are on the current version of Windows, and you do not require this upgrade. 

Step 2: Upgrade to Windows 11 Using Software Center 

The Windows 11 upgrade is provided through Software Center Software Center Icon application located on your Start Menu. To upgrade:

  1. Click the Search icon  searchin your taskbar. Type Software Center, then click the shortcut Software Center to launch the application.

  2. Before proceeding with the Windows 11 upgrade, please confirm there are no Windows 10 updates waiting to install or requiring a restart.   Please install all updates and restart your computer before upgrading.

  3. Click the option Operating Systems on the left navigation, and then click the application "UIUC-Extension - Upgrade to Windows 11" to view the upgrade requirements.

    Note: If you do not see the option available, your device may be ineligible for the upgrade.  To check if your computer is eligible, please review the instructions here: How to determine Windows 11 Upgrade Eligibility

  4. Please review the upgrade requirements information before clicking Install.

    Notice: A VPN connection is required for Remote staff in order to proceed with the Upgrade.

  5. Click Install to begin the upgrade process. A pop-up will appear with important upgrade information. Please read it carefully.

  6. After reviewing the upgrade information, click Install to proceed. If you wish to wait, click Cancel.
  7. A progress window will appear, and your computer may restart several times during installation.

    Please do not power off your computer! Your computer will restart and continue with the Upgrade. Please be patient.

  8. Once the upgrade is complete, please log in to your computer using your NetID and password.

  9. Please verify that your device is running Windows 11 by repeating Step 1 above.

Step 3: Troubleshooting Upgrade Issues

If you experience problems upgrading using Software Center, try these solutions:

  • Restart Your Computer

    • A simple restart may resolve temporary installation issues.

  • Check for Updates

    • Click the Start button and type Software Center, then open the application. Navigate to the Updates section and install any pending updates. Restart your computer.

    • Manually Upgrade to Windows 11
