How to Upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11
Step 1: Determine Your Current Windows Version
To check your current Windows version:

Click the Search Icon
in your taskbar.

Type winver and press Enter.

A window will appear displaying your Windows version.
- Ensure your version is Windows 10. If your version is Windows 11, you are already on the current version and do not require this upgrade.
Step 2: Upgrade to Windows 11 Using Software Center
The Windows 11 upgrade is provided through the Software Center application, located on your Start Menu.
To upgrade:
- Click the Search icon
in your taskbar.
- Type Software Center, then click the shortcut
to launch the application.
- Important: Before proceeding with the upgrade, ensure there are no pending Windows 10 updates or restarts. Install all updates and restart your computer if necessary.

In Software Center, click the option Operating Systems on the left navigation pane.

Click the application titled "UIUC-Extension - Upgrade to Windows 11" to view the upgrade requirements.
Note: If you do not see this option, your device may be ineligible for the upgrade. To check eligibility, refer to: How to determine Windows 11 Upgrade Eligibility -
Please review the upgrade requirements information before clicking Install.
Important: A VPN connection is required for remote staff to proceed with the upgrade. -
Click Install to begin the upgrade process. A pop-up will appear with important upgrade information—please read it carefully.
- After reviewing the upgrade information, click Install to proceed. If you wish to wait, click Cancel.

A progress window will appear, and your computer may restart several times during the installation.
Important: Do not power off your computer! The upgrade will continue after restarts. Please be patient. -
Once the upgrade is complete, log in using your NetID and password.

To verify the upgrade, repeat Step 1 to confirm your computer is now running Windows 11.
Step 3: Troubleshooting Upgrade Issues
If you experience problems upgrading via Software Center, try the following:

Restart Your Computer
A simple restart may resolve temporary installation issues. Please only restart prior to the installation. Do not restart during the upgrade unless prompted to restart.

Check for Updates

Click the Start button and type Software Center,

Open the application and navigate to the Updates section

Install any pending updates and restart your computer.

Manually Upgrade to Windows 11
If upgrading through Software Center isn't working, Extension IT can manually upgrade your computer.
