How to determine Windows 11 Upgrade Eligibility
This article provides step-by-step instructions for determining if your Dell computer is eligible for the Windows 11 Upgrade.
Discover your Dell Service Tag
In order to determine your computer's Windows 11 upgrade eligibility, you must first obtain your Dell Service Tag for your computer. Please follow these steps:
Method One:
Find the Dell Service Tag sticker located on the bottom of your laptop. The service tag number follows the letters ST. The Dell Service Tag is 8L2M2B3 in the example below:
Method Two:
Click the Search icon in your taskbar. Type System in the search box and press Enter.
The UIE-computer name contains the Dell Service Tag. The Dell Service Tag is BCVYKM3 in the picture below:
Determine Eligibility
To determine if the computer is eligible for the Windows 11 Upgrade, please visit Dell's Driver and Downloads Support web page here: https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us?app=drivers
- In the Identify your product search box, type your computer's Service Tag number. Click Search.
- After the search completes, you will see information about your computer as seen below:
- If you see a banner as highlighted above, then your computer is ineligible and cannot be upgraded.
- If you do not see a Windows 11 banner, then your computer is eligible, and the Windows 11 upgrade will be available for your computer in the Software Center. If you do not see it after a day or two, please contact the Extension IT Help desk for assistance.
Computers Ineligible for Windows 11 upgrade - Next Steps
- If your computer cannot be upgraded, please inform your unit's office support staff. They should make arrangements to replace your existing computer with a Windows 11 machine in their inventory or through the annual Extension Replacement Cycle (ERC).
- All computers ineligible for the Windows 11 upgrade should be data wiped and sent to Campus Surplus.
- The end of support for Windows 10 computers is October 14, 2025. All computers at that time that are not on Windows 11 will be disabled and removed from our Extension network.
