Create a group in Canopy

How sitewide administrators create a group and configure its identity, membership, source, and optional Sympa list.

Creating a group is restricted to Canopy sitewide administrators. Before you begin, confirm the group should be managed in Canopy rather than by an external service.

  1. Open Groups and select Create group.
  2. Enter the group name. Canopy suggests a slug from the name; you can adjust it using letters, numbers, dots, underscores, or hyphens. Add a parent group or description if needed.
  3. Select a membership type: manual membership, membership based on source organizations, or a dynamic rule. Complete the fields shown for that type.
  4. If the group belongs to a source service, select the service and provide its external reference ID when available. Leave them blank for a group managed only in Canopy.
  5. If this group should have a Sympa mailing list, enable Sync this group to Sympa and confirm the list alias.
  6. Select Create group. Resolve any validation messages and submit again if required.

Registration-managed groups must be created and edited in Registration, not in Canopy.
