Gies Classroom Technology Quick Start Guide

These guides will provide detailed instructions for using technology in Gies supported classrooms. Each section can be expanded, as needed. Select "Expand All" to see the entire guide.

  • Business Instructional Facility (BIF) - all classrooms, conference rooms and breakout rooms
  • Wohlers classrooms - Rm 152, 240, 241, & 243

Fall 2024 Changes:

Room 3001/3003 Technology Upgrades

  • New Lecterns! - What does this mean for instructors?
    • The lecterns raise and lower by the up/down keys on the far right of the desk.
    • The desktop monitors are not meant to be moved, please do not attempt to move them.
    • I-card reader is located on the right side of lectern, just below the desktop.
    • New document camera (it doesn't move either, but is a fantastic new addition to the classroom.)...choose Doc Cam on touch panel to use.
    • Outlets for a laptop are under the monitors: usb-c outlets are for charging only, usb-a outlets are for laser pointers, jump drives, etc.)
  • HDMI cable is available for wired laptop connection. Instructor is responsible for supplying any adapters they need.
  • Nothing should be placed on top of the cabinet located under the desktop.

Using the Touch Panel - Videos available on MediaSpace

Control window shades and lights

On the touch panel, select the light bulb icon

Use the provided on/off and arrow controls to adjust the room lights and window shades

Note: Presentation lights are directly in front of the projection screens. Turn them off to increase visibility of the projected content.

Raise and lower projection screens

To access the whiteboards behind projection screens:

On the touch panel, select the "Advanced" control, lower-left corner

To raise a screen, select "None" and then select the desired screen to raise

To lower a screen, select the input source (i.e. Room PC, PC Extended, etc.) and select the desired screen to lower

Connecting to Room through Wireless Network

Touch "Wireless" on the touchpad

Make sure the device that you are connecting wirelessly is connected to "IllinoisNet" wireless

  •  PC
    • Press keyboard shortcut: Windows K.
    • Select Room, ex: 3041-BIF.
    • Enter Code that appears in the lower-middle of the screen.
    • Select "Connect".
    • Optional: click the pushpin at the top of screen to unpin from the toolbar.
    • To disconnect:
      • Windows K
      • Click "Disconnect"
  • Mac
    • Open AirPlay menu in the menu bar or Control Cent.er
    • Select Screen Mirroring.
    • Choose Room, ex: 3041-BIF
    • Enter the 4-digit code (displayed on lower-middle of the screen.)
    • To disconnect:
      • Open screen mirroring
      • Select room (it is actually deselecting the room)

IN-PERSON ONLY (No Zoom)

Faculty teaching entirely from the classroom PC, single screen

Open the podium (BIF) or select Share on the touch panel (Wohlers, Deloitte Auditorium)

Note: in BIF, the podium door must stay open the entire class period

Sign into the classroom PC

On the touch panel, select Room PC

Access your instructional materials (Box Drive, USB flash drive, etc.)

    Note: if using flash drive or Wacom Pen Tablet, USB ports are available on the podium by the monitor

Open PowerPoint, browser, etc., as needed

Start teaching

When finished:
  BIF double-click the Log Off icon on the desktop & close the podium door
  Wohlers double-click the Log Off icon on the desktop and select End Session on the touch panel

Faculty teaching entirely from classroom PC with PowerPoint in Presenter View (BIF & 240WH only)

BIF Open the podium.

Note: the podium door must stay open for the entire class period

Sign into the Room PC

On the touch panel, select Room PC"

Access your instructional materials (Box Drive, USB flash drive, etc.)

   Note: if using a flash drive or Wacom Pen Tablet, USB ports are available on the podium by the monitor

Open PowerPoint

   Note: For Presenter View, select the "Slide Show" tab, check "Presenter View," set Monitor to "Primary Monitor," start slide show.

On the touch panel, turn on Advanced Mode, select Room PC and touch each of the monitors, then select PC Extended to see Notes View on the podium monitor.

Start teaching

When finished, double-click the Log Off icon & close the podium door.

Faculty teaching entirely from own laptop, WIRED, single screen (NO ZOOM)

Open the podium (BIF) or select Share on the touch panel (Wohlers, Deloitte Auditorium)

Note: in BIF, the podium door must stay open the entire class period

Connect laptop to the HDMI cable from the back of the document camera

On the touch panel, select Wired/HDMI

Start teaching

When finished:
  Reconnect the HDMI cable to the document camera
  BIF close the podium door
  Wohlers select End Session on the touch panel

Faculty teaching entirely from laptop, WIRELESS, WINDOWS, single screen (NO ZOOM)

Open the podium (BIF) or select Share on the touch panel (Wohlers, Deloitte Auditorium)

On the touch panel, select Wireless

Follow the on-screen instructions to connect AirMedia from Windows laptop (Control+K), select room

Enter the displayed 4-digit code (displayed lower-center on screen), click "Connect" to connect the laptop to the classroom wireless device (AirMedia)

Start teaching

When finished:
  BIF close the podium door
  Wohlers select End Session on the touch panel

Faculty teaching entirely from laptop, WIRELESS, MAC and/or iPAD, single screen (NO ZOOM)

Open the podium (BIF) or select Share on the touch panel (Wohlers, Deloitte Auditorium)

Note: in BIF, the podium door must stay open the entire class period

On the touch panel, select Wireless

On the Mac or iPad, open the AirPlay menu in the menu bar or Control Center

Choose the room from the list, e.g. BIF 3041, enter the 4-digit code (displayed lower-center on screen), and connect

Start teaching

When finished:
  BIF close the podium door
  Wohlers select End Session on the touch panel

Faculty teaching entirely from PC, dual screen (NO ZOOM) (BIF and 240WH only)

BIF Open the podium.

  Note: the podium door must stay open for the entire class period

Sign into the Room PC

On the touch panel, select Room PC, then PC Extended, then "Room PC"

Access your instructional materials (Box Drive, USB flash drive, etc.)

   Note: if using a flash drive or Wacom Pen Tablet, USB ports are available on the podium by the monitor

Open PowerPoint, if needed

  Note:PowerPoint Presenter View may not be used if using other material, for example a video on the second screen.

Select the material that you want on the secondary screen by clicking and holding mouse at top of window and dragging it to the secondary screen.

Start teaching

When finished, double-click the Log Off icon, touch "End Session" on the touch panel & close the podium door.



Will it duplicate their display by default? Do they need to enable Extended display on their device? Is that supported?

 CLASSES WITH ONLINE PARTICIPANTS (Zoom required)

NOTE: The Zoom meeting MUST be started from the room PC in order for remote participants to see and hear the class. You may share content from a laptop or tablet into the meeting via the directions below.

Faculty teaching entirely from the classroom PC, with Zoom

Open the podium (BIF) or select Share on the touch panel (Wohlers)

Note: in BIF, the podium door must stay open the entire class period

Sign into the classroom PC

On the touch panel, select Room PC

Access your instructional materials (Box Drive, USB flash drive, etc.)

Affix and turn on the lapel mic (optional the ceiling mics will pick up audio very well)

Open PowerPoint and start your slide show. Note: Presenter View does not work in Zoom

Launch Zoom and start the scheduled meeting for the class

Start teaching

To share content with remote participants, select the green Share Screen button in Zoom

  • To share your entire desktop: choose Desktop (top-left)
  • To share your PowerPoint Slides only: choose the PowerPoint option
  • To share content from a laptop or tablet:
    • Connect your secondary device via the HDMI cable or the wireless interface
    • In Zoom select Share Screen, then the Advanced tab
    • Select choose Content from 2nd Camera
    • In BIF 3001, 3003, WH 240, or 241: On the touch panel, touch the Zoom 2nd camera button Wired, Wireless, or "Doc Cam," then select "Share."
    • In all other Gies classrooms: On the touch panel, touch the Zoom 2nd camera button Wired, Wireless. If sharing the document camera, select "Wired."
    • Note: if content doesnt display: select Switch Camera in the top-left corner of Zoom screen. Keep selecting it every few seconds until Zoom shows the correct camera.


BIF Only - To see the Gallery View on the back monitor, on the touch panel, select Advanced, select "PC Extended," then touch the back monitor on the touch panel.

When finished:
  BIF double-click the Log Off icon on the desktop & close the podium door
  Wohlers double-click the Log Off icon on the desktop and select End Session on the touch panel

Zoom with remote Guest Speaker

Start by following the instructions above, "Faculty teaching entirely from the classroom PC, with Zoom." Zoom may automatically start with Front Camera activated. If it does not, select the carat ^ by "Video" (bottom-left corner) and select "Front Camera."

Guest Speaker will join Zoom

Guest Speaker will be on Room PC and Guest Speaker will see most of the classroom in their participant view/Gallery.

Start by following the instructions above, "Zoom with remote Guest Speaker."

On Touch Panel

  • Select "Advanced"
  • Select PC Extended
  • Touch each of the monitors that you want to display Guest Speaker material. Note: the main screen should be Room PC so students can see Guest Speaker.
