Identity Management, NetID creation character rules
What are the format requirements for a NetID?
NetIDs follow the following rules:
- Minimum of 3 characters
- Maximum of 8 characters
- Valid first two characters: letter (a-z)
- Valid subsequent characters: letters (a-z), number (0-9), dash (-)*
- Must not contain interior numbers**
- If ending with a number, the number must be between 2-999 inclusive, and must not have leading zeros***
- Student NetIDs will always end in a number****
*The dash is no longer assigned; some NetIDs have dashes from a legacy ruleset and have been grandfathered in
**Users transferring from Springfield may have NetIDs that contain internal numbers; these have been grandfathered in
***Users transferring from Chicago may have NetIDs that end in a number with a leading zero; these have been grandfathered in
****Transfer students from Chicago or students who had affiliate accounts prior to admission may have NetIDs without a trailing number; these have been grandfathered in
We do not reassign previously assigned NetIDs. The NetID needs to be unique across the entire university system (cannot have previously been assigned to someone else or used on another campus).
