Windows Version Check

Occasionally one may need to know the version of the Windows operating system a computer is running. As of mid-October 2025, only Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 23H2 are still supported. Below are the steps to quickly check which version of Windows is running on a computer.

  1. Click in the Windows logo at the bottom left of the desktop or just press the Windows logo on the keyboard (bottom left, between the CTRL and ALT keys).

  2. After doing one of those two things, simply type the letters "winver" (without the quotes) and winver will appear with "Run command" in the Start Menu area.

  3. Press Enter and a pop-up box appears with the information.

IMPORTANT:
If the version does not say 24H2 or 23H2, the operating system is out of support, making the computer vulnerable. Please email helpdesk@business.illinois.edu or call 217-244-0812 to let us know you need assistance!
