Self-service upgrades to Windows 11
Instructions on how to upgrade a computer to Windows 11 from the Software Center or via Windows Update.
Before you begin
- This update can take up to 3 hours to complete. We suggest you start it at a time when you will not need the computer until it is done updating. Starting the update so it runs overnight is a good option.
- We recommend you start the update on a weeknight, to ensure IT support will be available should you need us.
- When running the update on a laptop, please be sure it is connected to a charger.
- We suggest you back up any locally stored data as a safeguard.
If your computer is on campus
- Click on the Programs icon and search for “Software Center”

- Select “Software Center”

- Select “Updates” in the left menu pane.

- Select “Windows 11 version 24H2” and click ‘install’.
If your computer is off campus
- Bring it to campus, if possible.
- If not able to bring to campus, you can click the Start Menu button (
) in the lower-left of the screen. - Search for “Check for updates” and click the option under “Best Match”

You should see a screen similar to this:
- If you have pending updates that require a restart, click “Restart now”, then log back into the computer after the restart and go through the steps to get back to this page
- If there are no updates, click on the “Download and install” button under the “Windows 11, version 24H2 is ready” banner to start the Windows 11 upgrade.
Once the update process is completed, log into the computer as normal. First login can take longer than usual but this is expected behavior, as the new operating system is setting configurations.
