How to add an Engineering printer on Mac

Instructions for connecting to a College of Engineering department printer. These instructions do not apply to Engineering Workstation (EWS) labs.

Instructions with screenshots

  1. Open System Preferences and click 'Printers and Scanners'. Then click "Add Printer, Scanner, of Fax..."

  2. In the new window, if there is not "Advanced" on the top bar, please hold down Option and Right click then click "Customize Toolbar"

  3. Click and drag the Advanced icon from the new window into the toolbar of the previous window then click "Done"

  4. Click on the Advanced icon, and in the new window, fill out the following information:
    • Type: Windows printer via spoolss
    • Device: Another Device
    • URL: smb://engr-print-01.engr.illinois.edu/printer-name
    • Name: The name of your choosing
    • Location: The location of your printer (optional)
    • Use: Generic PCL Printer (or the specific printer driver, if you had previously downloaded and installed it on your computer)

  5. Click "Add"

  6. In this new window, you may have the option to choose Duplexer, or other options for the printer. Afterwards, click "OK" to finish

  7. At some point in this process (depending on your OS and other factors), you'll be prompted for credentials.
    • For your username, enter the following: uofi\NetID (e.g. uofi\jsmith2)
    • Use your regular NetID password.

Updating Old Password

If you have changed your NetID password recently, there is a possibility your old password is still cached in Keychain Access. Though your old password no longer works, your computer may still be using it automatically. You can clear that by following these steps:

  1. Launch Keychain Access from the Launchpad

  2. Click on "Passwords" on the left toolbar under “Category

  3. Look for an entry named "engr-print-01" by using the search bar on top right of the window.

  4. Right-click on it and then delete it

After removing the entry, try printing again. When you print, it will ask you for your username and password, for which you can enter your NetID credentials. (Make sure to enter UofI\NetID for a username).
