Learn@Illinois Moodle - Assignment Activity
Learn how to navigate the assignment activity. This activity allows students to submit work to their teacher for grading. The work may be text typed online, uploaded files of any type, submitted to a forum in Moodle, or even homework collected in class. Grading may be given as written or recorded feedback, simple direct grading, grading guides, and/or rubrics. Students may submit as individuals or in groups.

- Grading all of a student's forum participation in one screen
- Grading an in-class presentation with a rubric
- Automatically granting all of the members of a group the same score (with the option to change individual scores)

- What is the difference between the due date and cutoff date?

Technically yes, but the Illinois Media Space Assignment is much better suited to this.
Best Practices
- Use clear descriptions of assignment in the description field including:
- How students will be graded including any grading guides and rubrics
- Formatting rules
- File types that will be accepted
- Examples of exemplary submissions
- Communicate dates in a way that is easy to maintain
- Rarely use hard due dates (e.g. September 22, 2017) - opt for relative dates (e.g. Tuesday of Week 1) whenever possible
- Use the year when typing hard due dates so that if it does not get updated, it will be clear that this is the wrong date.
- When you would like to collect submissions at midnight, consider using 11:55pm instead. Students are often confused when something is due on Monday at midnight, but the system says that it is due on Tuesday at 12:00am.
- There is usually not a need to force students to click submit (unless you are collecting drafts and final submissions in the same area).
Groups and Groupings
- With individual assignments such as Assignment, using groups is only for sorting. In other words, it does not affect the student view, but can be used by instructors to organize by section, for example, so that TAs can view all of their students at once.
