SSW - How to Transfer Browser Bookmarks

Unless you sign into Chrome or Firefox with a Google or Mozilla account, respectively, your browser's bookmarks are stored locally on your computer's hard drive. This doesn't raise issues until you need your bookmarks transferred to a different computer. In this scenario, just follow the instructions below your browser's name.

Firefox

Import

  1. On the computer with the bookmarks you want, open Firefox. Press Ctrl + Shift + B to open the Library window.
  2. From the Library window's toolbar, click "Import and Backup" and select "Export bookmarks to HTML".
  3. Save the HTML file. If you plan to export to another computer, the target location would preferably be on a portable storage device like a flash drive.

Export

  1. Navigate to Firefox's Library window on the computer to which the bookmarks will be transferred. Click "Import and Backup" and select "Import Bookmarks from HTML".
  2. In the Import Bookmarks File window that opens, navigate to the HTML file you are importing and select the file. Click "Open".
  3. Your bookmarks are now imported. If they don't appear in the window immediately, check the Bookmarks Menu.

Chrome

Import

  1. On the computer with the bookmarks you want, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click "More" (the icon of three dots arranged in a vertical line) and select "Bookmarks" > "Bookmark Manager".
  3. In the Bookmark Manager, click "Organize" and select "Export bookmarks to HTML file".
  4. Save the HTML file. If you plan to export to another computer, the target location would preferably be on a portable storage device like a flash drive.

Export

  1. Open Chrome on the computer to which the bookmarks will be transferred. Click "More" and select "Bookmarks" > "Import Bookmarks and Settings".
  2. In the "From" drop-down menu, select "Bookmarks HTML File". Click "Choose File".
  3. Navigate to the HTML file you are importing and select the file. Click "Open".
  4. Click "Done".
  5. If you haven't created any bookmarks in Chrome, the bookmarks will show up in the bookmarks bar. If you already have bookmarks in Chrome, the bookmarks will be in a new folder labeled "Import from..."
