Phone Purchasing Information

Procurement and compatibility information for Yealink IP phones and USB Phones.

Selecting a Phone Type

There are two main types of phones:
1. IP Phones - Require a data jack.  These are best for shared workspaces like labs and clinical areas, but can be used for single user office scenarios as well.  Some models have advanced features for integration with Teams such as speed dial contacts and quick buttons to manage phone tasks more quickly.  Only certain IP phone models are compatible with the campus telephonic solution, and Teams compatible models must be purchased.

2. USB Phones - Plugs into a computer.  These are ideal for single users in office situations where a computer is available at the location and logged into when the phone is needed.  USB phones are soft phones where the phone is actually software on the computer and any microphone/speaker combo turns it into a phone.  All the phone functions can be performed on the computer, but some USB phones devices have a number pad and shortcut buttons, whereas others are just a microphone and speaker.  Most USB microphone/speakers can be used as a USB phone, though specific recommendations are below.

Recommendations

1. Client Services Reps - The Plantronics Voyager 5200 is recommended.

2. Heavy Phone Users / Office Managers
- The Yealink 54 may be adequate, but consider the Yealink 56 or 58 if managing high call volumes.

3. Labs and Common Areas - The Yealink 54 is recommended.  Note:  The USB Polycom handset (looks like a traditional phone) common throughout the College is no longer manufactured or repairable.

4. Faculty and Office Staff - The Yealink 54 is recommended if you require a traditionally looking phone, but the USB should be considered.  They are more future proof, lower cost and offer hands free options.  A Jabra is hands free easy to use and allows natural speech, but is best for private offices.  For noisier environments consider a wireless headset such as the Plantronics Voyager or Logitech Zone Wireless.  Details below.
