Policy

All animals present in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital must be registered.

Guidelines

Animals may be present in the VTH under three circumstances: 1) as a patient of the VTH, 2) as an enrolled animal in an IACUC approved protocol, 3) as a privately owned animal enrolled in the faculty/staff day boarding program.

Exceptions to these guidelines MUST receive approval from the VTH Director’s Office PRIOR to the animal being present in the VTH.

Animals identified in violation of this policy will be registered and appropriate charges entered into the HIS visit. Charges may be entered retroactively. The responsible person will be liable for any expenses incurred. Repeated violations of this policy by individuals may result in disciplinary action and suspension of privileges.

Procedure (if applicable)

Animals receiving hospital services or utilizing drugs and supplies must be registered in the Health Information System (HIS) while present in the VTH. All services and supplies must be entered onto the patient’s visit. The animal must be discharged when leaving the VTH and payment is due at that time.

Animals present in the VTH for use under an approved research or teaching protocol must be registered in the HIS and have a signed consent form associated with the visit. If pre-registered, these animals do not require that a new patient fee be charged. Charges for the visit will be dictated by the protocol and should follow VTH Policy Bill306a Research Adjustment- Clinical Research. Animals must be discharged when leaving the VTH.

Animals enrolled in the CVM Employee Boarding Program must be preapproved and will follow VTH Policy #Misc802 (CVM Employee Boarding Program). Animals actively enrolled do not need to be registered in the HIS when in the VTH.
