Controlled Drugs on Farms Ambulatory Vehicle
Purpose/ Applicability: The purpose of this SOP is to describe the correct process to obtain a controlled drug stored on the Ambulatory vehicle for use on farms Scope: Use is intended for veterinarians and technicians working in a field setting.
Equipment:
- Locked box: There is a locked box secured beneath the back seat of the truck with a chain lock.
- Keys: The key to the lock box is attached to the truck key ring
- Chain lock: Used to secure the locked box beneath the truck seat
Procedure:
- Remove truck key ring from the Key lock box in the Ambulatory room.
- Unlock the cab of the truck.
- Lift up the back seat on the drivers side.
- Unlock the locked box.
- Remove the drug bag and unlock the zipper.
- Remove controlled drugs.
- Record all information required on the yellow sheet attached to the controlled drug.
- Return all drugs to the bag.
- Lock the zipper.
- Replace bag and lock in the box.
- Enter drugs used in the paper record left with the farmer as well as in SANDI.
- Turn in charge sheet to the FARMS veterinary technician for billing.
- Lock the truck cab when the truck is not in use and return keys to Key lock box.
- Once a week the drug bag is taken to the Medication Dispensary for inventory.

Locked box: A secure box with a key lock in the ambulatory truck, beneath the back seat.
Key lock box: The secure box with punch code access in the Ambulatory room that stores all important keys.
Drug bag: Locked bag containing the controlled drugs housed within the lock box.
Yellow sheet: Controlled substance recording sheet.
