Microsoft Entra Device Registration, How to Unregister

This article explains how to remove the Microsoft Entra registered state for a device. This is useful for scenarios such as if you are leaving the university, or if you will no longer be using the device.

Microsoft Entra device registration provides users with benefits such as single sign-on (SSO), detailed in this KB article for Windows devices.

However, there are scenarios in which you would want to remove the registered state for your device. You can view your registered devices here https://myaccount.microsoft.com/device-list.

If you are unregistering your device because device management policies were applied to it, please see this article: 'Microsoft 365, How do I undo the "Allow my organization to manage my device" setting?'.

Removal Process

The preferred way to remove the registered state for a device is to do so locally. This ensures that any registration information is removed from the device, and that the removal is synced up to Microsoft. You will notice the change in your device list after a couple of minutes.

Information from this Microsoft support page. When removing your devices, please make sure that the process completes and that your device's internet connection is stable.

Windows Devices

For Windows 10 or 11

Go to Settings > Accounts > Access Work or School.

Select your account and select Disconnect.

iOS and Android

Device registration happens via the Microsoft Authenticator application.

To unregister, open up the application, then go to the app's Settings > Device Registration, and select Unregister device.

macOS

For macOS, you can use the Microsoft Intune Company Portal application to unenroll the device from management and remove any registration.

What about older devices that I no longer have access to?

If you see devices in your device list that you no longer have access to, you can disable them. Once a device is disabled, it can no longer be used for sign ins for your University account to Microsoft desktop applications. This cannot be undone by the user.

After the device is disabled, it will still appear in the device list. This is fine.

Caution: You should only disable the device if you are 100% sure that you will no longer need to sign into University resources with it. Office products (including Microsoft 365 Apps such as Outlook or Teams) on Windows require the device to be registered with the Entra ID of the user account in order to allow sign in with that user account. No device registration with the Entra ID = no sign in to Office for that Entra ID user from that device. Disabled device registration also means no sign in.

If you accidentally disable a device that you are using, admin intervention is required. Best to play it safe. If you are unsure, you can contact the Help Desk.
