Office 365, Email, Exchange, Recovering Deleted Items in Exchange

Follow these steps to restore mistakenly deleted email to an Exchange account.

Recover deleted items

Exchange has a self-service recovery feature that allows you to recover items that have been deleted within the last 30 days.  You may recover deleted items using webmail or Outlook on Windows. Please note that items moved to the recoverable items folder lose their folder structure so you will only be able to see the deleted emails and the not folder they were in.

How to find deleted items in outlook.office365.com

  1. Check the Deleted Items folder.
If the desired items are in that folder, use the Move to option (in the horizontal toolbar) to transfer them to another location
If the desired items are not in that folder, continue to Step 2.
  2. Click the Recover items deleted from this folder link. This will open the Recoverable Items folder.
  3. Select the emails you wish to recover by clicking on them. You can use the Shift and/or CTRL key to select multiple emails.
  4. Click on the Restore link (in the horizontal toolbar).
The emails should appear in the folder it was deleted from.

How to find deleted items in Exchange from Outlook on Windows:

  1. Check the Deleted Items folder.
If the desired items are in that folder, use the Move option to transfer them to another location
If the desired items are not in that folder, continue to Step 2.
  2. Select the Folder tab from the tab list at the top of the window.
  3. Click the Recover Deleted Items icon (Recycle bin with blue recovery arrow)
  4. Select the messages you wish to recover, then select Recover selected Items (envelope with blue recovery arrow)

The emails should appear in the folder the item was deleted from.

These methods of recovery are the only solution for restoring deleted items for individual mailboxes from Exchange.  The backups of the Exchange system are for system wide disaster recovery purposes only and do not go back as far as the self-service solution.
