Email, Spam Control, Email or attachment disappears

When sending email that contains an attachment to an @illinois.edu address the message disappears, but when sending to a non-University address the message is delivered.

As part of its efforts to protect the University from malware and other email threats, emails that are sent to @illinois.edu email addresses are scanned for known viruses. If an attachment contains a virus, the email is automatically deleted.

Certain file types are automatically filtered; a list of those is available here: Spam Control, Attachment Filters. Archive file types (such as .zip) that contain more than 256 files or are more than 10 layers deep (folders within folders) are automatically filtered.

Q: I need to send or receive a file that is being filtered. What can I do?

A: The best way to send files is not through email attachments, but through Cloud-based supported file sharing services.
  • Note: Once an attachment is stripped, it is deleted and cannot be retrieved.
