Illinois Compass 2g, Direct Submit
This page contains information about using DirectSubmit in Illinois Compass 2g.
Direct Submit
SafeAssign’s Direct Submit is for instructors and TAs only.
Instructors can submit papers directly to this tool and run an
originality report without student interaction. Submitting papers
through Direct Submit adds the content to the University’s Institutional
Database to be used to check future semesters’ coursework for
plagiarism.
Creating a Direct Submit Item
- From the Course Management menu, select Course Tools.
- Select SafeAssign.
- Click the DirectSubmit link.
Note: The page opens to the Private
Direct Submit window, labeled “Private Direct Submit for Your Name.”
Papers uploaded to this area and any corresponding originality reports
will only be visible to you.
- If you would like your fellow co-instructors and TAs to be able to view the papers and their reports, click the Shared
button in the small window to the left of the main content area on the
page. To be certain that you are working in the shared section, check
that the title of the content area is “Shared Direct Submit for course
Your Course Name.”
- You can upload papers directly to the top-level folder
for the course, or you can create individual folders to upload papers
into. To enter papers to the top-level folder for the course, jump to
step #5.
- To create a folder, enter a title of the folder in the New
Folder field. In this example, the folder will be named “Freud Papers.”
- Click Add.
- The folder will now appear under the top folder or any folders you have previously created.
- To upload papers to this new folder, click its title and then follow the process outlined in step #5 and on.
- To upload a paper, click the Submit a Paper button.
- You can select from the Submission Options:
- Submit as draft: A SafeAssign report will
be generated, however the paper will not be added to the institutional
database and will not be used to check other papers.
- Skip Plagiarism Checking: Adds the papers to the
institutional database without checking for content copied from other
sources. This is useful if an instructor wants to upload papers from a
previous section of a course to ensure that current students are not
reusing work.
- Or you can choose to leave these options
unselected and submit papers to the Institutional Search Database and
receive an originality report.
- If you wish to upload a paper from your computer, click the button next to Upload File. Click Browse, and choose the file you wish to upload. Reminder: File types accepted by SafeAssign are limited to .zip, .doc, .docx, .odt, .txt, .pdf, .rtf and .html.
- If you prefer to copy and paste a selection from a paper, click the Copy/Paste Document button. Enter a Paper Title and paste the Paper Text.
- Click Submit.

Tips
- SafeAssign accepts files in .doc, .docx, .odt, .txt, .rtf, .pdf, and .html file formats only.
- Files larger than 10 Mbytes or 5000 sentences of text are automatically rejected.
- SafeAssign reports are not generated instantaneously; it usually
takes from several seconds to a few minutes to receive a report for each
paper.
- The time to receive a report may be higher during periods of heavy
use (e.g., the end of a semester) or for lengthy or image-heavy papers.
- You and your students will have to set your web browser to always
allow cookies in order for all of SafeAssign’s features to display.
