Security, Access to Network or System Data for Research Purposes

I am a researcher. How do I gain access to router, network traffic, or system logs for research purposes?

Network and system data can trivially be used to identify individuals on the campus network and more generally, patterns of traffic that could put specific populations at risk.

Generally, research using network traffic logs or system logs may require the approval of the Institutional Review Board (IRB). Privacy and Information Security has developed a formal protocol with the IRB that addresses data anonymization and related issues. Please visit http://go.illinois.edu/NetworkData for more details and a link to our Easy Guide on this issue.

Researchers are encouraged to contact securitysupport@illinois.edu to arrange a meeting to discuss their project and what data may be available.
