Kaltura, Trimming or shortening a video

Taking a video or audio asset in Kaltura and making it shorter via "Trimming" it. This will excise time segments from the beginning or end of a media entry, but not the middle. Only the ends may be trimmed. This process will be the same in Compass, Moodle, or Mediaspace.

How do I trim and video in Kaltura?

What is trimming?

Trimming allows the media owner to shorten his or her own media by removing content from either end of the video. This works similarly to Clipping, but overwrites the original content. Once trimmed, the trimmed content cannot be recovered. Clipping will create a new entry.

How do I trim media?

  • Navigate to your 'My Media' page. You will see your media arranged in a list. On the right side of the page, each entry will have an 'Edit' button. Select this to edit the media. You will also find an edit button on any of page where you can view media that you own. It will be below the video on the right, in the 'Actions' drop-down menu. Select the "Trim Video" tab.
  • Enter the Start Time for where you want the media to begin and an End Time for where you would like the media to end. You may also use the handles to drag the start and end times or play through the media and use the 'Set Starting Point' and 'Set Ending Point' buttons.
  • After setting the start and end times, you can use the 'Preview' button to see what the media will look like after trimming.
  • Select 'Trim Video'. Note: trimming a video will replace the original media
