Endpoint Services, MECM, How do I maintain my own boot image?

Overview

This article provides information about boot images in MECM.

Systems

  • Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM)

Intended Audience

  • University of Illinois IT Pros leveraging MECM, hosted by Technology Services' Endpoint Services team

General Information

Each unit is provisioned a copy of the default 32-bit and 64-bit boot images within their unit folder under 'Software Library --> Operating Systems --> Boot Images'.

Boot image updates

There are various scenarios when a boot image update may be required:
  • Each MECM release includes an update to the client components and/or Windows PE version.
    • Update the boot image by right clicking it and selecting 'Update Distribution Points'.
    • Select the option to 'Reload this boot image with the current Windows PE version from the Windows ADK'.
  • In order to customize the boot image with drivers or other optional components:
    • Right-click the boot image and select 'Properties'.
    • Make desired changes to the 'Drivers', 'Customization', and 'Optional Components' tabs.
      • Note that if adding drivers, doing so via the boot image's properties will attempt to first enumerate every driver in the database, typically crashing the console. Instead, do the following:
        • Under 'Software Library --> Overview --> Operating Systems --> Driver Packages' and double-click the driver package that contains the desired driver/s.
        • Locate and right-click the driver and select 'Edit --> Boot Images'.
        • Select the desired boot image from the list.
    • Right-click the boot image and select 'Update Distribution Points' after the changes have been applied.
  • If imaging issues occur after Windows PE in the boot image is updated, look for duplicate drivers in the boot image properties and remove older versions.
  • Note that while only the 64-bit boot image needs to be updated, both it and the 32-bit boot image need to be distributed to a PXE-enabled distribution point in order for PXE to function.
