Campus Wi-Fi, Connecting to IllinoisNet on Android

Android devices can be configured to connect to IllinoisNet and other campus networks using the SecureW2 JoinNow app. Android's interface can differ significantly between versions and manufacturers, so these instructions are maintained on a best-effort basis.

Technology Services provides the SecureW2 JoinNow configuration service to make setting up IllinoisNet easy. It will automatically provide the correct network settings and certificates for all recent versions of Android.

JoinNow needs to be installed as an app on your device to get started, which will require an internet connection.

If your device does not have a mobile data connection, you can establish a temporary internet connection by way of our Guest network. Follow the steps here: Technology Services Wi-Fi Help Portal - Visitors and Guests

Configuring with SecureW2

You can find the SecureW2 JoinNow app on the Google Play Store and install it to skip to step 4.

  1. Use a web browser to navigate to https://go.illinois.edu/WiFiSetup
  2. The SecureW2 website will automatically detect the device's operating system, showing an Android logo and a blue Download button:
The SecureW2 site indicating that it has detected an Android device. The page has a description of the SecureW2 configuration, and a blue "Download" button.
  3. The Download button will link to SecureW2 JoinNow app on the Google Play Store. Install the app.
  4. Return to the website and tap the blue Join Now button. The link will open up the JoinNow app to load the configuration, then open a browser popup to prompt for your Illinois account:
The browser prompts for an Illinois account through Microsoft SSO. The site offers to return to the JoinNow app to finish configuration.
  5. A prompt will appear, asking about wireless networks being suggested by the app, granting the app permission to control wi-fi, or the app wanting to save a network. This prompt is different between Android versions, but must be accepted:
The JoinNow app shows a warning about the Android system prompt that is about to appear. The Android operating system asks permission to add networks served by the JoinNow app. This prompt looks different between versions, but must be accepted.
  6. After accepting the prompt, check the Settings app to be sure the device shows it is connected to IllinoisNet and has internet access. You may need to manually select IllinoisNet from the list of wifi networks the first time.

More information about joining and troubleshooting networks with the SecureW2 JoinNow application is provided by SecureW2 on their website here.
