iSchool Conference Room, 4018

This is a brief overview of Room 4018, a conference/study room on the 4th Floor of 614 E Daniel which can be reserved during working hours (9am - 5pm on weekdays).

Equipment

There is no built-in computer in this room, so the only way to display something on the wall-mounted television is to connect it to a laptop. The best way to do this is by using the HDMI cable because more issues arise when connecting wirelessly.

Room 4018 Equipment
Room 4018 is equipped with the following: Room 4018 does NOT have:
  1. Seating for 8
  2. A whiteboard
  3. A wall-mounted television with speakers
  4. An HDMI cable for attaching a laptop to the television
  5. Solstice and Airplay for streaming

  1. A built-in computer
  2. A built-in microphone
  3. A built-in camera
  4. A tablet-controlled A/V system

Using the HDMI for Laptops

You can connect your own laptop to the television and use it in this room, and it’s best suited for in-person events, as there are no cameras or microphones available.

  1. Find the HDMI cable connected to the television.
  2. Take the loose end and plug it into the laptop leaving the other end connected to the television.
  3. Turn on the television using the red power button on the remote control. Please report missing remotes to the Help Desk.
  4. Press the Source button on the remote control and select the laptop from the list of available sources on the television. It will be listed as HDMI 2 Unknown. If you do not see this source listed, unplug the HDMI cable from the laptop and plug it back in.
  5. If the television says "detecting device", you can skip this process by clicking the return button on the remote. You can skip any setup instructions that display on the television.
  6. The laptop should now be connected to the television.

NB: If your laptop does not have an HDMI port, you will need to use a dongle (adapter). You can borrow one from the Help Desk if you don't have your own.

    • When connected with a dongle, sometimes the screen will fracture into horizontal bars or the display will split and show part of another display. This is because the dongle is not strong enough to handle the high resolution and you will need to use a different one.

Using Wireless Content Sharing

Connecting using Solstice (Windows)

If you want to connect wirelessly to a Windows laptop, you will need to download and install the Solstice application on your device. If you are borrowing a laptop from the Help Desk, this should already be installed. Mac users have the option to use AirPlay, which does not require a separate download and installation. Either option is display-only and does not connect you to any built-in speakers, camera, or mic (room 4018 does not have these built in anyway).

  1. Check that you are connected to the IllinoisNet wireless network.
  2. Turn on the television using the red power button on the remote control. Please report missing remotes to the Help Desk. If the remote cannot be found, you can perform these actions using the action button below the Samsung logo on the television.
  3. Press the Source button on the remote control and select Cable Box from the available sources on the television.
  4. Follow the instructions on the main display by opening your web browser and navigating to the URL displayed. If you need to download the Solstice application, there will be a link to do so. If you already have it installed, click 'Already have the app?'
  5. You will be given a 4-digit code on the main display to input into the Solstice application on your laptop. Afterwards, click 'Connect'.
  6. From there, you will be connected to the room and can choose to share your desktop, an application window, or a media file.

***After going through these steps once, you can just open the Solstice application after Step 2 and select the 4018 room from the recent list.

Connecting using AirPlay (Mac)

  4. Go to System Settings > Displays and select the proper room from the available displays in the Add Display drop-down.
  5. You will be prompted to enter the AirPlay password.
    1. There should be a 4-digit code displayed on the main display.
    2. Enter this as the password. This password changes regularly so you do not need to save or remember it.
  6. From there, you will be connected to the room and can choose to share your desktop, an application window, or a media file.

Adjusting Screen Scale, Resolution, and Layout

You may find it necessary to adjust the scaling, resolution, or layout of what is being displayed on the projector(s) for better visibility. Your steps are different between Windows and Mac devices.

Mac:

To adjust the scaling or resolution, go to System Settings > Displays, click the image that says "Built-in Display," and you will have options for text scaling. Select the one that works best for you. If you wish to adjust your resolution instead, click the image up top that say "PT-RZ570" and choose from the list of resolutions available.
