Printer Set-up for Windows

How to install a printer on a Windows machine.

ATTENTION! Important Note!

The instructions for Windows 11 have not been working to set up printers properly. We are looking into the issue. In the meantime, Windows 11 users should be able to follow the instructions for Windows 10 setup successfully. Please contact the Help Desk if you run into any issues.

Windows 11

See special note above!

Windows 11 is the most updated version of Windows. To set up a printer on a computer with a Windows 11 operating system, follow these instructions.

  1. Make sure that you are connected to IllinoisNet and have enabled network discovery for public networks. If you are not sure if you have enabled this, you will be prompted to later in the setup process.
  2. Click the Start icon at the bottom of your desktop, then click the Settings gear icon.

  3. Once in Settings, search for Printers & Scanners on the left side menu. Then click Add device.

  4. Your system will scan for a minute. Scroll all the way down until you find the option that says The printer I want isn't listed. Click on Add manually.

  5. On the new window that pops up, select "Select a shared printer by name" and type "\\ischoolprint.ad.uillinois.edu\printername", then click Browse. The printer will start installation. If you are prompted to log in here, enter your NetID followed by "@illinois.edu," along with your UIUC password. Make sure to check "Remember credentials," otherwise the printer will not work correctly the next time you use it.

  6. It might take a bit of time for the installation to complete. After you get the message the printer has been successfully added, click Next. The printer is now set up. Click Print a test page if you would like, otherwise click Finish.

  7. Repeat steps 1-6 for any other printers you would like to add.

Windows 10

To set up a printer on a computer with a Windows 10 operating system, follow these instructions.

  1. Make sure you are connected to IllinoisNet and have enabled network discovery for public networks. If you are not sure if you have enabled this, you will be prompted to later in the setup process.
  2. Click the Start icon in the bottom left corner of your desktop, then click the Settings gear icon.

  3. Once in Settings, click Devices and then Printers & Scanners on the left side menu. Then click Add a printer or scanner. Your system will scan for a minute, after which you can click The printer I want isn't listed. This will open another window.

  4. Select "Select a shared printer by name" and click Browse. This will open a search window. You may be prompted to turn on network discovery for public networks if you have not already, by a banner message at the top of the window.

  5. Type "\\ischoolprint.ad.uillinois.edu" in the "Printer" search bar at the bottom of the window and click Select. If you are prompted to log in here, enter your NetID followed by "@illinois.edu," along with your UIUC password. Make sure to check "Remember credentials," otherwise the printer will not work correctly the next time you use it. After you complete this, a list of printers in the iSchool building should appear.

  6. Click on the printer you would like to add. Once you have selected your printer, click Select, then Next.

  7. You may be prompted to enter your NetID (NetID@illinois.edu) and password at this point. You should only have to do this once.
  8. The printer is now set up. Click Print a test page if you would like, otherwise click Finish.

  9. Repeat steps 1-8 for any other printers you would like to add.

Older Versions

To set up a printer on a machine running an older Windows operating system, follow these instructions.

  1. Make sure you are connected to IllinoisNet and have enabled network discovery for public networks. If you are not sure if you have enabled this, you will be prompted to later in the setup process.
  2. Navigate to the Control Panel and select View Devices and Printers. From there select Add a Printer at the top of the window.
  3. When the Searching for Available Printers... window appears, select "The printer that I want isn't listed" when it comes up.
  4. Toggle the Select a shared printer by name option, then click Browse and then type "\\ischoolprint.ad.uillinois.edu" in the search bar at the top. This will let you click on a printer if you don't know which one you want to add.
  5. In the address bar (where it says Network) type \\ischoolprint.ad.uillinois.edu and hit Enter. If prompted for credentials, check Remember credentials and for the username put UOFI\NetID (replace NetID with your NetID) and put in your University password (used for IllinoisNet, webmail, and most other services).
  6. Click on the printer you want to add. Once selected, click Next.
  7. It should now download the driver and install the printer. Click Next again when you get the message that the printer has been successfully installed. Feel free to print a test page or click Finish.
  8. Repeat steps 1-7 for any other printers you would like to add.

NOTE: If you needed to authenticate in step five and didn't check Remember Credentials, you may not be able to print after disconnecting from the network. If you are experiencing this issue go to Control Panel, then search for Credential Manager. Go to Windows Credentials, then Add a Windows Credential. For the network address put ischoolprint.ad.uillinois.edu, and for the username and password use the same information as in step five. Click OK. Reboot the computer and try again.
