KB User's Guide - Documents Tab - Exclude a Document from Search

In some cases, you may wish to publish a document without allowing it to appear in your site search results. This can be done using the Exclude from search feature in the KB document editor as explained below.

How the "Exclude from Search" Setting Works

If Exclude from search is selected when the document is published, that document will not appear in any of the following:

  • Live site search results
  • "Top Documents of the Week" lists
  • "Most Recently Updated Documents" lists

Documents flagged with Exclude from search can still be viewed on live sites by navigating directly to their published URL, or by entering their ID numbers in the live site search box. These documents will also continue to appear in searches in the KB Admin Tools.

The Exclude from search option can be particularly useful for short documents/texts (e.g., examples, disclaimers, warnings, and credits) that are meant to be included in other KB documents. It is also ideal to view a document on the live site without it being discoverable by others.

  • Note: This setting does not currently prevent documents from being indexed by Google or other search engines.

How To Apply It

  1. Open the document to edit it in the KB Admin Tools.

  2. In the right side panel, open the Searchability section. In the Search priority dropdown, select Exclude from search.

Search priority is the first setting under the Searchability section.
  3. Use the status dropdown to Publish the document, or use the Request to publish... option if you do not have publish rights. Once published, your document will no longer appear in search results.
