Contextual guide for navigating ACCC instructions on 2FA and VPN configuration

What is a Virtual Private Network (VPN)?

The VPN allows someone to access certain resources that are only for UIC members to use. UIC is using Cisco AnyConnect to allow people to connect to the UIC VPN. See this explanation from UIC Technology Solutions for more detail.

What is Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)?

2FA is an additional layer of authentication beyond your username and password. The UIC VPN requires 2FA. See this explanation from UIC Technology Solutions for more detail.

Steps to successfully connect to UIC VPN

  1. Set up 2FA for your UIC account. Here are instructions for off-campus. Then install Duo Mobile, and Add a Device.

  2. Download Cisco AnyConnect VPN from the UIC WebStore. Choose the installation file that pertains to your machine/OS. Mobile devices will access the installer from their App Stores (see links in Step 3).

  3. Install the VPN.

  4. Decide what "Group" you need to use to access the resources you are seeking. In general, students need "Library-Resources". Note that *all* network traffic will then go through the VPN, so you may wish to disconnect from the VPN for streaming video or other non-UIC activities.   5. Access the VPN by authenticating to Cisco AnyConnect with your UIC credentials AND your 2FA passcode. See this explanation from UIC Technology Solutions for more detail.



Note: After initial configuration, only steps 4 and 5 are necessary for subsequent VPN connections.
