Canvas@Illinois, Suppressing Profile Picture for Students

This page explains the process of changing or suppressing your profile picture in Canvas if you are a student.

Profile pictures are automatically uploaded from the university's iCard repository into Canvas once a semester, typically following the 10th day after classes begin; a global announcement will appear in Canvas prior to the upload. The images are uploaded to student profiles as a way for instructors to associate a name with a face in their class.

If you are an instructor who wishes to change their profile picture or suppress your image in Canvas, please visit the following Knowledge Base article: Canvas@Illinois , Suppressing your Profile Picture for Instructors

Change Your Profile Picture

If you would like to change your Canvas profile picture to another picture of your choice OR a grey anonymous icon, you can follow the instructions on this Knowledge Base article: Canvas@Illinois , How to Upload a Profile Picture for Students Note: You will have to make this change each semester following the iCard image upload, if you wish to do so.

Suppressing Your Image

If you do not want your iCard picture used as your profile picture now or in the future, you will have to submit a request to suppress your Directory information. Prior to the sixth day of instruction for a specific term, students have the right to request that directory information be kept confidential. The process to submit a request follows below.

Note: Please recognize that there are a few disadvantages to suppressing your information:

  • You can't choose which information you want to make private. It is either all
private, or all public. In other words, you cannot suppress ONLY your
    address and phone number.
  • Third parties such as prospective employers and insurance companies
will not be able to verify your enrollment by themselves. You will have to
    provide them with a transcript.
  • You will not be able to order or download software from the Tech Services WebStore
because the software needs to recognize you as a student or staff member.

Students who wish to suppress their home phone number and address in their Electronic Directory (ED) entry can do so. Students suppress their directory information by filling out a FERPA suppression form at the Admissions & Records Building.

A suppression request can also be faxed or mailed to the Office of the Registrar. The request needs to include the following information:

A statement expressing your desire to have your personal information suppressed.

  • Your UIN
  • Full name as it would have appeared when you attended UIUC
  • Full name as it is presently (if different)
  • Copy of a photo ID
  • Current email address or phone number
  • Personal signature

Office of the Registrar
Phone: (217) 333-6565
Fax: (217) 333-3100
901 West Illinois
Urbana, IL 61801
Email: registration@illinois.edu

Requests will be in force until the student notifies the Office of the Registrar in writing that the information is no longer to be restricted.

Unsuppressing Your Image

Students who had their home phone number and address suppressed in the Electronic Directory and who now wish to unsuppress it can do so. Students unsuppress their directory information by filling out a FERPA reinstatement form at the Office of Admissions & Records Building.

More information about FERPA suppression can be found at the following web page: https://registrar.illinois.edu/ferpa
