Specifications for the basic level of printing support provided by EWS, primarily for departmental lab printers in EWS-supported departmental labs.

Printer purchase | Unit purchases printer from a list of recommended models provided by Engineering IT. See this page. |
End-of-life2 | When the printer reaches the end of its useful life, Engineering IT will provide a usage analysis at the request of the unit and provide a recommendation for replacement based on that analysis. End-of-life2 printers will be removed from the print server at the end of each semester. |
Printer configuration | Engineering IT will connect the printer to the network and print servers, and manage the print queue. |
Consumables | Unit will purchase and supply paper, toner, and maintenance kits. |
Restocking | Unit will restock printer. |
Repairs | Engineering IT will cover basic troubleshooting1. Repair is the responsibility of the unit. |
Cost to unit | No fees are directly charged to the unit (as unit is purchasing consumables directly). |
Cost to students | No cost to students. |
Web Printing | Web Printing may be enabled at the unit's request, but will not be done by default. |
1 Basic troubleshooting is defined as a remote check of whether the printer is online, communicating with the print server, and if it is reporting an error state (jam, out of paper, low toner).
2 A printer is considered "end-of-life" when any of the following conditions are met:
- The printer has exceeded its manufacturer-recommended monthly page volume three times within 12 months.
- The printer has been repaired three times within 6 months AND the manufacturer warranty is expired.
- The printer has exceeded its manufacturer-recommended maximum monthly page volume by a factor of 12 (lifetime pages printed).
- The printer manufacturer no longer provides one or more of the following for the printer's model: replacement parts, services, or updated drivers.
