ATLAS FormBuilder - Adding and Editing Form Sections

This document explains how to add new sections to the contents of a FormBuilder form, and how to edit existing ones.

Sections are the broadest level of organization in a form's contents. They can contain text or specific Campus Person information, and can be populated with questions. All of a form's questions must be associated with a section, as no part of a form's contents can exist outside of a section.

Sections are used in conjunction with phase permissions to determine what parts of a form's contents should be displayed in specific phases. The order of a form's sections determines the order in which the broader contents of a form will display, regardless of phase. Information on reordering the sections of a form can be found at ATLAS FormBuilder - Reordering Form Sections.

To create a new section or edit an existing one...

Step 1 - Navigate to your form's dashboard, and click Manage in the header of the "Form Contents" panel.

The dashboard of a form. The "Manage" link in the header of the Form Contents section is highlighted.

Step 2 - If adding a new section, first select a phase that you wish to contain your new section in the Global Settings panel, and then click the Add Section button in the Form Contents panel. If your form does not yet have any sections, you may also click Add New Section in the Form Preview panel.

The "Form Contents" page of a form. The "Select Phase" field under "Global Settings" is highlighted and marked with a (1). The "Add Section" button under "Form Contents" and the "Add New Section" button under "Form Preview" are highlighted and marked with a (2).

If editing an existing section, first select a phase in which your desired section is placed using the Global Settings panel. Then, locate and select the section in the Form Preview panel, and click the Edit button that appears in the Form Contents panel.

Step 3 - A settings panel for the selected section will open beneath the Form Contents header. The panel's editable fields include:

  • Section Name: What the section will be titled internally.

  • Section Type: Allows the choice between a Standard section, which has the ability to display text and associate questions, and a Person Information section, which -- in addition to the sharing the capabilities of a Standard section --  displays a graphical widget containing information from the University of Illinois profile of a specific "Campus Person."

The information displayed in a Person Information section's widget corresponds with any "Person Attributes" that have been enabled in the form's Properties menu.

  • Text Format: Only available for Standard sections. Determines whether the section's text field accepts Markdown or PlainText formatting.

  • Text/Introductory Text: Optional field that allows for input of text to display at the top of the section. For Standard sections, the text format is based on the answer to the Text Format field. For Person Information sections, the text format is always Markdown. Regardless of the format type, the text field accepts FormBuilder's text merge system.

  • Select Person: Only available for Person Information sections. Determines whether the person whose information is displayed in the section's widget is the response submitter, the last person to modify the form response, or the answer to a "Person" question.

  • Select Default Tab: Only available for Person Information sections. Determines which category of Person information is selected by default in the section's widget (Student, HR, etc.).

The editing window for the "Standard" section type is on the left side of the image, while the editing window for the "Person Information" section type is on the right.

Step 4 - Once you are finished making changes to the section's settings, click Save Changes at the bottom of the panel.

Your new or newly-edited section will now be ready to use!
