This page contains information on how to set up IMAP on your mobile device or desktop email client to receive your Google Apps @ Illinois email.

What is IMAP?

The Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) lets you download email from Google's servers to your mobile device or computer. IMAP creates a constant connection between mail clients (Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird) and Gmail.

If you would like to receive your Google Apps @ Illinois email on your desktop email client using email software you'll need to:

Enable IMAP access to your Google Apps @ Illinois account

  1. Log in to the Google Apps @ Illinois web interface at
  2. (If this is your first time logging in:) Select your preferred language and accept the terms of service.
  3. Near your NetID at the top right of the screen, click the Settings link.
  4. In the Settings window, click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP link.
  5. In the IMAP Access section, select Enable IMAP.
  6. Click the Save Changes button.

Set a Google Apps @ Illinois POP/IMAP password

  1. Log in to the Partner Computing Password  site using your NetID and Active Directory password.
  2. In Type a password and Confirm the password fields, enter your chosen Google Apps @ Illinois password.
  3. Click the Set Password button.
  4. Log out of the Partner Computing Password site.

You will see a screen that says that your password has been set. You now have a password that will allow you to access Google Apps @ Illinois email from clients other than the web interface.

Set up your email client

Once you have enabled IMAP in your Google Apps @ Illinois account, you can configure your mobile device or mail client to receive email from Google Apps @ Illinois.

Note: Depending on which client you want to use, you might need to allow less secure apps in your Google Apps settings.

If the email client asks for... ...then enter the following:
Your username, user id, or login
Your password Use the password you set in the Partner Services Password page
Your email address
Your incoming mail server (IMAP)
Your incoming mail settings

Authentication: Password
Use Secure Socket Layers (SSL)
Port 993

Your outgoing mail server (SMTP)
Your outgoing mail security settings

Authentication: Password
Use TLS (if available) or SSL (if not)
Port 587 (if TLS selected) or 465 (if SSL selected)
