Alertus, Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about Alertus, the connector that allows Illini Alert messages to be displayed on digital signs.

Are there any costs associated with using the Alertus Client?

No. Alertus.com is providing a site license for campus. However, our licensing only covers digital sign hardware.

Does this run as an MS-Windows service on the system?

Yes.

Do vertically-oriented signs scale and rotate the alerts?

Yes.

When and where will digital signage install packages be available?

They are currently available. Search for Illini-Alert on the U of I Webstore

Do alerts take over the sign for the entire time of a longer term event (such as a gas leak)?

Perhaps. Illini-Alert messages are triggered when there is an eminent threat regarding life, health, or safety to campus. On-scene incident command determines when the threat has been mitigated.  The alert message will be displayed as long as DPS and Incident Command deem necessary.

Can we have alerts for weather-related events?

Yes, when DPS decides to issue those. Another option is a weather feed within the regular content of the sign (utilizing Four Winds).

When will you test alerts?

Testing will happen on the first Tuesday of the each month at 10:05 AM. Technology Services will have after-action reports and may be able to provide the results to departments in cases where signs are not functioning.

Is this going to be required for all campus digital signs?

Currently, the solution is being offered as “opt-in” addition to Illini-Alert.  Utilizing the software is at a department’s discretion.
