Email, Exchange, What happens when quota is exceeded?

What happens when my Exchange account goes over quota?

Mailboxes on the Exchange system have auto growing quotas that are calculated and adjusted every night.  The quotas are high enough that they should not be reached by any normal operations in a single day and are only in place as a safety measure to protect the system.

The formula used for calculating the mailbox quota is below.

If mailbox size is below 5GB the quotas are set to:
  • 10GB: warning
  • 15GB: prevent sending mail
  • 20GB: prevent receiving mail
  • 30GB: recoverable items quota

If the mailbox size is greater than 5GB the quotas are set to:
  • Current mailbox size + 10GB: warning
  • Current mailbox size + 15GB: prevent sending mail
  • Current mailbox size + 20GB: prevent receiving mail
  • 30GB: recoverable items quota
