Email, Exchange, What is the limit to the number of recipients per message?

What's the limit on the number of recipients per message on the Exchange server?

  • While the maximum number of recipients allowed by the Microsoft Exchange server is 5000, most spam filters will scrutinize any email with a large number of recipients since it fits a classic spam pattern.
  • Mail clients may start to experience problems if the total number of recipients exceeds around 200.
  • Exchange should not be used for mass mailings. If a department needs to send mass emails, they should utilize a departmental email server or use one of the Campus Massmail options.  See Email, Guidelines and best practices to Massmail, Bulkmail and survey email .
