How to find deleted items, lost emails, missing messages, or to recover deleted email and/or folders on Exchange

In Outlook on Windows, when you delete items (i.e., messages, tasks, appointments, contacts), they move to the Deleted Items folder. You may easily retrieve them by opening the Deleted Items folder, locating the items, and then moving them to another folder.

Deleting items from the Deleted Items folder will put them in a dumpster for 30 days, after which time they are permanently deleted. However, you can recover items during the 30-day holding time. Follow the directions below to recover items from the 30-day retention area:

How to find deleted folders/email in Exchange in OWA (https://webmail.illinois.edu):
  1. Check the "Deleted Items". If there are no items in that folder, go to Step 2.
  2. Right click "Deleted Items" and then select "Recover Deleted Items"
  3. Select the emails you wish to recover by clicking on them and using the Shift/CTRL key to select multiple emails.
  4. Click on the envelope with recovery arrow - on the left of the screen mid-way down the window.
  5. Select the folder you wish to recover to, then select Recover...
  6. The emails should appear in the folder you selected.

How to find deleted folders/email in Exchange in Outlook on Windows:
  1. Check the "Deleted Items". If there are no items in that folder, go to Step 2.
  2. Select the Deleted Items folder
  3. Then select the Folder tab.
  4. Click the Recover Deleted Items icon (Recycle bin with blue recovery arrow).
  5. Select the messages you wish to recover to, then select Recover selected Items (envelope with blue recovery arrow).
  6. The emails should appear in the folder the item was deleted from.

These are the only steps to recover email, the Exchange team will not be able to assist beyond this.
