I have a virus on my computer. How can I remove it?

Note: Malwarebytes and Sophos will begin to be replaced with CrowdStrike in Fall 2019. Please send questions to

If you have an infected computer:

If you are University employee and the infected computer is University-owned, or the infected asset contains any work data or information, contact your IT support professional or immediately for assistance.

If the infected computer is a personal computer containing no University data, consider using a free version of Malwarebytes or Kaspersky AV.

Even after using an antivirus tool, an independent computer support professional should verify that all malware has been removed.

Be aware that some severe malware may require a complete reinstall of the computer.

As a precaution, always store backups of your data on another device or in cloud storage such as Box or Dropbox.
